Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy aims to help people discover what lies underneath their emotional difficulties and the ways that these are communicated via their symptoms and behaviour.

Children, adolescents, and young adults can be particularly vulnerable and can feel overwhelmed by the increasing demands of everyday life. Such difficulties can often result in maladaptive ways of coping, whether inward or outward.

I offer a safe and non-judgmental space where all types of thought, feelings (either negative or positive), and emotional needs can be listened to, validated, and explored. Understanding the underlying meaning behind symptoms and behaviours enables us to gain a better sense of control of ourselves, to develop healthier ways of coping, and to articulate thoughts and feelings instead of "acting them out". During the sessions, attention is drawn on how our past and current experiences can have an impact on our emotional world, ways of functioning and patterns of relating to others.

Psychotherapy supports people to develop the capacity to embrace all aspects of their personalities, appreciate their talents and grow their resilience. Research has shown that psychotherapy has a 'sleeper effect' and continues to be helpful after therapy ends.

Parent work

Parent work is highly recommended and often complements the work with children. It can be very effective in supporting children and young people who are in therapy with another clinician or even when they refuse to engage with therapy themselves.

In my work with parents, I offer a supportive environment whereby they can make sense of their child's behaviour and difficulties and reflect on their relationship with their children. We reflect on their internal parenting templates as they stem from their own childhood experiences and how these can have an impact on their parenting style. This understanding enables parents to develop better ways of responding to their children, improve their relationship with them and support their recovery.
